What we do, 2014, 1 hour performance
Video documentation of moments of performance in Summer Lake, OR, USA
I used a wet cloth to perform a circle on a floor. Then I followed the outer line to dampen the full circle, crawling around on my knees towards the center. Before reaching the end, the outer line had already started to fade away and in order to prevent any change, I had to start all over again. The act was repeated for an hour, but could have gone on forever; the water only continued disappearing.
Walking in circles and constantly repeating what has already been done so many times takes us nowhere; it is an act of the absurd. It is the safe monotonous insisting of the well-known, an action of neglecting to reflect that will keep us living in the past instead of the present.
